Empathy:
What were some of the worries you had coming into 6th grade?
I was worried...
  • No one would like me.
  • Maybe I wouldn't be able to find my way around school.
  • Of the bigger transition from elementary to middle.
  • Of making new friends
  • People wouldn't have the same interests as me
What difficulties did you face trying to make new friends?
I didn't have any difficulties because I...
  • Made friends at raider camp
  • Exchanged numbers with the girls I met at raider camp
  • Started to sit with them at lunch
How do you get to school?
My mom drives me to school
Do 8th graders scare you? Why?
I feel like...
  • Some of them are helpful and nice
  • The ones that are rude, I avoid and get out of their way
How do you feel about Non-GT kids?
My feelings are undecided because I haven't been exposed to many of them
The ones I know are nice and complimenting
How do feel about your teachers?
I feel like...
  • The teachers are phenomenal (Especially Mr. Sebek because he is witty and fun)
How do you like lockers?
I...
  • Love the lockers
  • Like decorating them
  • Like interacting with people around the locker area

Define:
  • 8th graders in the hallways
  • Drastic changes between elementary school and middle school
  • Making new friends
  • Sticking out
  • Having no one to sit with at lunch
  • Navigation around school
  • 5 minute extension
Reflection Question: We chose this problem out of all of the others because our client felt this was the biggest problem she had in 6th grade, and the one she wanted solved the most. This will impact many of the student because many are hurt in the hallways from "stampedes" so cutting the crowd in half will avoid the problem of kids getting hurt.

Ideate:

  • Upper Glass floor
  • Dismissal by grade, not all at once
  • Escalators (Like in airports) that move forward
  • Swipe ID card instead of a combination lock
  • Maps posted everywhere for people who don't know how to get to class
Reflection Question:
One of the most important problems was that our client was being run over in the hallway, so we prototyped the idea that there will be 2 floors, one for people who are on time and dont run and the other for people who do run. This solves her problem because she wont get run over in the hallway because the people who run are on a different floor, and she will get to class on time because she will be able to get to her locker and not have to avoid crowds.

Feedback

How do you like the prototype?
I think that...
  • This was really cool
  • It was an amazing idea
  • It solved the problems I had in the hallway
  • All of my friends would like it too
How can we make it better?
  • Make the floors one way glass, or at least opaque
  • Padded areas around the stairs, in case someone falls.
What do you like/dislike about this prototype?
I like...
  • The people are underneath, seeming like your walking over them
  • That we are entirely seperated by a whole floor

I dislike...

  • There are steep staircases
  • The floors are see through
Will this make your 6th grade experience better? How?
This makes my experience better because...
  • There would be no more traffic in the hallways
  • I can get to class on time
  • I wont get trampled in the halls
Did we solve your problem? How?
  • This solved my problem because of the above reasons

Revisions:

We made the glass see through originally, but our client said that the only problem for her was that she wore skirts to school, and if she was on top, it would be a problem. So we revised it and made the glass opaque on our prototype by adding clear tape, so no one can see through the glass.

Reflection Questions:

Describe at least 5 insights, epiphanies, reframes (big or little) you had about project. Please include what led you to these i.e. what fun stuff you did to uncover them?
  • Some insights we had while doing this project were to make the class such that the kids underneath feel that they are being trampled on by seeing their feet. We felt this would give the the students a "sweet sense of revenge".
  • Also, we realized that we should make it as realistic and detailed as possible to make it seem more "functional".
  • After the first draft, we decided to change the transparency less clear so that the people underneath could not see up and "intrude the privacy" of those on top.
  • When we were naming the prototype, we saw how the glass hallway helps in transportation to classes. Hence the name "The Glass Class".
  • The most significant moment was when we came up with the genius idea for this prototype. If we would have never experienced that "light bulb moment", we would have never made this prototype anyways.
How did you work as a team?
  • We worked well as a team because we interacted and shared in the construction of the prototype. Also, we all helped in updating this page.
What was your best/worst team experience?
  • Our best experience was when we realized how much our "marshmallow" liked the prototype and how well it served her needs. Our worst time was when half the project was destroyed and we had to start over.
When was your team process strong?
  • Our team process was strongest during the first two days of prototyping because we were all eager to help and create it as efficiently as we could.
What would you do differently next time?
  • Firstly, we would change the way we created the opaqueness. Secondly, we would make the model more functional and pretty.
